Portrait: Honorable Mention 2025 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
My parents in their garden, with my reflection appearing, held gently in my mother's hand. This photograph carries deep personal significance for me. After returning to photography, shifting my focus from commercial work to personal projects, a powerful realization struck me: despite years behind the camera, I had never captured a proper portrait of my parents, both now 78. It felt like being a 'cobbler without shoes' – documenting others' lives while neglecting this essential image of my own family.
Taken during a recent Easter visit, driven by a sense that 'now was the right time,' I yearned to be truly present with them in the frame. Given the physical distance between us, the mirror's reflection became my unique solution: I could join the portrait, simultaneously being the photographer and a son within our family scene. My mother holding the mirror adds another layer of weight, subtly mirroring the situation of me being rarely home.
A curious coincidence emerged: I was 46 when I took the photo, my parents were both born in '46 (making them 78), and I was born in '78. While I favor observation over numerology, these numbers added an intriguing, almost destined, layer to the moment.
Presented in black and white, this image intentionally draws on the tradition of classic portraiture, emphasizing the timeless nature of family bonds. The backdrop, which I painted myself, adds another unique personal touch. This long-overdue portrait ultimately captures connection across distance and time, a testament to the enduring presence of family.
