Architecture: Honorable Mention 2014 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
My experimental photography methods began during my architecture, where I studied the seemingly perpetual development of glass condo towers on Toronto’s waterfront. The original art pieces used photographs of the existing condo tower building type as a case study, overlaid to find the essence of the type.
I use an overlay technique to represent a different vantage point on the built environment, one that merges multiple instances of the same object, incorporating the element of time. The images seem to find the average, mean, or essence of the subject, by emphasizing only the repetitive elements. Using more than 30 layers in each image, I aim to capture an icon in the way people’s memory works – a conglomeration of various fleeting images recalled as one.
The goals of the project are: to document the environment in a unique way; to show the same object over time, collapsed; to bring movement to the forefront, recording patterns, while objects that don’t repeat appear ghosted; to encompass anywhere from years to a few brief moments; and to see the beautiful in the mundane, ordinary, and everyday.
