Out of High School, Peter D. Erhard volunteered for the military draft, and was drafted into the U.S. Army, the September following his graduation. He served two years.
After his service Peter earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied both the visual arts (drawing painting, and printmaking) and graphic design. He later did a year of post graduate study in Design for Visual Communication in the Master of Science Program offered by the Institute of Design, at Illinois Institute of Technology, also in Chicago. It was there where Peter became more involved in Photography. He approached Aaron Siskind, Head of the Photography Program. Arron told Peter to "go Medium Format", Peter followed that advice and purchased a YashicaMat 124G, and began his search for images, up and down the alleys and streets of Chicago.
Several years later he received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Advertising and Graphic Design from Syracuse University, College of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse,
New York.
During Professor Erhard's career in both the commercial and fine arts he has worked as a Graphic Designer in Chicago, Illinois; Denver, Colorado; and South Bend, Indiana. He has taught Graphic Design, Photography, and Printmaking at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, and La Sierra University, in Riverside, California. Though now retired from his teaching responsibilities at La Sierra University, he is active in photography around Southern California, Viet Nam and other interesting countries. Over the years he has exhibited selected photographs in Southern California, New York, Michigan and Indiana. His work has been displayed in B&W Magazine and its website.
