ENTRY DESCRIPTION
As I was attempting to do something interesting with breaking waves on the Mendocino Coast, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. I spun to my left and in that second caught the pelicans coasting the crest of a wave breaking just ahead of them. Sometimes the picture you want requires hours and days of waiting; sometimes -- very rarely -- the picture you want comes like a gracious gift.
AUTHOR
Although I studied photography in college, including traditional darkroom techniques, I set aside my camera to pursue graduate studies, which eventually took me to Scotland (Ph.D., University of Edinburgh). In 2000 my father gave me a medium format camera, and that renewed my interest in photography. I am the author of seven non-fiction books and currently working on a novel. I recently retired from my work as a Presbyterian pastor. I am married to Shari, and we enjoy our family and friends and dog, reading, sailing, hiking, and of course good food and wine.
