Portrait: Honorable Mention 2014 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
It started in front of the bathroom mirror. Black bags under the eyes, a bloated outer and sagging cheeks had been added to my face. Life as a parent of young children left their mark. In three and a half years, I had stopped jogging, eating badly and slept too little. Fatigue resulted in cravings for sugar that late nights appeased with walnut ice cream, dill chips and nut chocolate. There is much good in the world. As a thank for that I had gained about 38-45 extra pounds. Likewise, new wrinkles was cutted into my face. The new me! This was not the person I wanted to be seen as out on the town. How had this happend!?
My job as a photographer is to highlight the best side of the person portrayed. The right angle, the right light fix this. But if instead I played with the idea to do the opposite (excellent raw materials were already available). Find my worst angles, my worst poser ... what would not be possible to make out of that! So nice for once not trying to look as beautiful as possible. A relief.
These images are foremost created in the camera, at the shutter moment. No facial distortions were made afterwards. What we see is what takes place only by gravity law forces. The pictures are true in a sense that in that particular moment, from this angle in that light my face looks just like this.
