ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Acid Violence remains one of the cruelest forms of retailiation in South East Asia. Among the many factors leading to this type of agression are the easy availability of acid that anyone can purchase, permisive laws that allow the perpetrators not to be punished adequately, and very frequently a past history of war related violence.Acid attacks occur for various reasons such as jealousy, envy and even territorial disputes, and require a high degree of premeditation on behalf of the perpetrator who needs to buy the acid, stalk the victim, wait for the right moment to attack , and avoiding getting hurt while throwing the acid. The main problems with the acid victims are not only the terrible burns, disfigurement and pain which might last a lifetime, but also the psychological trauma, which as well might never heal.Another added pain is the social discrimination and stigmatization of the victim, which leads him to the loss of his job, social isolation to avoid discrimination, and many times to a total isolation. Many acid victims (as the one in the image) turn into begging as their only source of income.
