Portrait: Honorable Mention 2014 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The particular series I am sending in focuses on issues concerning skin damage and perception of skin. It seems that documenting skin in black and white could give us less visual information, but I have found that the opposite is true. Through photographing in grayscale, I have simplified and highlighted various issues related to environmental impact that lie just below the skin’s surface. I’ve brought to light different realities concerning skin such as exaggeration of skin tone, UV damage, acne scars and blemishes, birthmarks, and visible veins. My hope for this series is to bring to light what is otherwise unseen by the naked eye. By not censoring imperfections, I’ve found that they work to our advantage in creating more depth and texture, resulting in portraits that recognize all aspects of living skin.
