ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Garðar BA 64 is thought to be the oldest steel ship in Iceland, launched in Norway in 1912 and built with a specially designed reinforced hull to endure the harsh conditions of the Southern Ocean where it was used to hunt whales. On becoming deemed unfit for use, unlike usual custom to sink such vessels, the Garðar was rammed ashore at Skápadalur where it still sits today, a magnificent rusting ship set against the backdrop of westfjordland and the Icelandic sea.
