Of all the Asia religious festivals, the Indian celebration of Thaipusam is perhaps the most fascinating and dramatic. Thaipusam is a Hindu (especially the Tamil community) festival celebrates the birthday of Lord Murugan (Subramania) a manifestation of beauty, youth, masculinity, valour and vitality. It also celebrates the struggle between good and evil, the day Lord Murugan vanquished the evil demon Soorapadman with the Golden Vel (lance) that was given by his mother Parvati. On this occasion, Hindu devotees to Lord Murugan publicity offer prayers, sacrifice and thanksgiving in fulfilment of vows for favours granted. Most often, however, offering are focused on kavadi bearing and are accompanied by ecstatic trance where devotees allow their bodies to be pierced and decorated with needles, hooks and skewers in an expression of faith and loyalty. Each of them has the very own reason from their heart to fulfill their vow in this important day. They just want to show their love to the God.
