ENTRY DESCRIPTION
A photo of a young woman taken during a visit to one of the settlements of the Surma tribe in the surroundings of Kibish village in southern Ethiopia, on the west bank of the Omo River. Piercing and lip plates are a part of the Suri culture. Most women at the point of maturity have their bottom teeth removed in order to get their lower lip pierced. With time the hole in the lip is stretched for the plate to be placed in the hole of the piercing. Having a lip plate is regarded as a sign of beauty and the bigger the plate is, the more cattle the woman is worth.
