Portrait: Honorable Mention 2015 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
In 50 years of independent nationhood, Singapore’s identity has shifted as it evolved from a backwater fishing village unknown to the world into a leading global player. A modern city, high living standard, advanced technology and high speed internet, these are just some of the comments regularly made by visitors in Singapore. Although the struggling life is long gone, but the stories of the hardship still can be clearly told by the pioneers of Singapore, through the portrait.
AUTHOR
Alan's work reflects the nature of humans habitat in both control and non-control approach. It embraces the natural state of each individual without interfering the pattern of their behaviour, which to me is most sincere and honest in telling their story visually.
Before Alan knew what photography was, he was self introduced to a twin-lens reflex camera he found at home. He did not know what it was for but it was certainly a unique and fun toy to him, at the age of six. Like an omen defining the purpose of Alan’s life; to be a photographer.
Alan entered the professional photography world right after graduated with a degree in photography from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 1995, he was soon attracted to the fast pace of the news room. He joined The Straits Times (Singapore’s main English- language broadsheet) in 1997. During his time there, he produced countless catchy cover pages, edgy fashion spreads, arresting celebrity portraits, and powerful documentary photos. His work has won him many local and international awards, including Lucie Awards- International Photographer of the Year, Nikon Photojournalism, and WAN-IFRA. Over the next 12 years, he became the paper’s most sought-after feature photographer, and was promoted to senior executive photographer at the age of 30.
In 2009, as passionate as ever about photography and visual communication, Alan left The Straits Times to challenged himself and set up the Alan Lim Studio to continue doing what he does best. In a few months time, one of Alan’s highest achievements in his career arrived when he was awarded by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to conceptualize a series of his portrait.
