A Howler Monkey baby peeks out from under it's mother at the stranger near their home in the Belize River Valley jungle.
Imagine my surprise as I walked through the Community Baboon Sanctuary, which is an approximately 20 square mile habitat for the threatened Black Howler Monkey in the jungle of the Belize River Valley. I was hoping to find a monkey - any monkey, to photograph.
One minute I looked up and saw nothing. Looked again and I saw the intense stare of a large female howler monkey. Looked a third time through my viewfinder and saw not only the mother, but the similarly intense eyes of her baby peeking out from just beneath the mother's chin. Click! The baby was gone. And of course the next moment they were both ... gone.
