Conceptual: Honorable Mention 2016 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Death of Alice II is a photograph exploring the concept of one's own death. Experiencing the transition into death can only occur from an outside perspective - observing a loved one pass, as happens to everyone at some point in their life. Yet, it is a concept which weighs on us alll, and through exploration we may deconstruct the experience. The photograph explores two aspects of death - the transition away from our familiar physical world into the unknown, illustrated by the ghostly spirit leaving Alice's body. The second aspect, depicted by the rabbit, is the idea that we leave behind everything we have known. We are left to make the transition into the unknown completely alone. The same way we transition into life. Drawing inspiration from Alice in Wonderland is natural, as it is a place of unknown, mystery, and strangeness.
