Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2016 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Changing world. A stressed out elephant cow charges in a dusty land. Drought is a great seasonal killer of wildlife in sun baked East Africa. The browsers like elephant suffer as much from the lack of vegetation as from the lack of water. The dry season is a natural hazard for this region, which the animals have survived for centuries. But over grazing from goats and cattle has decimated the land of much of its natural cover such as grass and bushes. The area becomes a dramatic dust bowl. Although the land comes back after the rain, it never fully recovers and each year deteriorates more and more. Livestock are as much of a threat to African wildlife as poaching (Kitirua Conservancy, Kenya). Photo by Michael Fell.
AUTHOR
Mike Fell is a wildlife and conservation photographer specializing in natural history, science and conservation related issues. A wildlife fanatic, adventurer, safari guide and conservationist with 21 years of experience in the field, Mike believes that photography and story telling are key components of conservation. With a deep respect and understanding for African wildlife, his work explores the diversity of life and brings attention to the impacts of human activity on wildlife in his home continent of Africa.
Mike's passion often takes him on safari to places far removed from the normal pathways, to remote and less travelled destinations, in order to capture animals in their natural environment. This regularly puts him in situations where he is up close and personal with wild animals and that is why his photos often arouse feelings of intimacy with the creatures he depicts.
Action is needed to preserve our natural world and Mike's hope is that his photographs will inspire people everywhere to join the cause and to help stop the senseless destruction of life and beauty before it is too late.
