ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This photo (Me?) is part of the project called SUPER(NATURAL) WOMAN. It is a collection of double-exposure photographs, manually crafted in the darkroom, entirely without the assistance of digital editing.
In this project, I focus on the woman and her connection with nature in order to achieve a peaceful state of mind. As we all come from nature and belong to nature, we are all looking for a connection with nature, as it is one of the most significant sources of energy and inspiration. A woman has so much wildness, so much joy and unpredictability in her heart. A woman dreams, loves, cares… Some days are more “dark”, some days are more “bright”. It’s like black & white photography - light & shadow, all mixed together.
Each photograph is one of a kind. I use film cameras and black & white film only. Film has a beautiful texture, it is a natural and archival medium. The women who posed for me are my good friends, so it was a very spontaneous and fun collaboration, free and sometimes adventurous too. After the photoshoots, I began my darkroom work of processing and printing. This step was very important for me since I was selecting different negatives, and combining them together in order to create a story by making "double exposures". There is a meaning and personal story behind every image. Also, for several of the images, I wrote corresponding poetry inspired by the mood of the photographs.
AUTHOR
I was born in Slovakia and moved to the United States permanently 4 years ago after temporary stays for work in Nevada and Pennsylvania. I settled in Charleston together with my husband, but our future is still open for adventure and traveling.
I am dedicated completely to black & white film photography and archival darkroom processing; it is a beautiful and magical hands-on process.
At Redux Contemporary Art Center (Charleston), my colleague and I, began to collaborate for a cultural photography project. Charleston: One City, One Soul, a project for Unity in Black & White. We used medium format film cameras to emphasize the unity of Charleston via 100 street portraits of its citizens.
Two years ago my big dream came true. I partnered with my two friends to build The Charleston Darkroom, where we create photo projects and teach workshops for heritage film photographers and beginners, new to the craft.
My most recent effort and the work is titled: “SUPER(NATURAL) WOMAN.” It is a collection of double-exposure photographs, manually crafted in the darkroom, entirely without the assistance of digital editing. In this project, I focus on the woman and her connection with nature in order to achieve a peaceful state of mind.
