Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2017 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I catpured this image in March 2017 whilst on a trip to the Lake District in the United Kingdom. The light was fleeting but illuminated the peak of the Wainwright (colloquial name for a hill in the Lake District) in the distance named 'Skiddaw'.
It was a brutally cold, windy and ethereal day and I wanted to capture the feeling of the landscape in which I was immersed. I attempted a number of compositions before settling on this one and decided on a longer exposure to draw attention to the Wainwright through the movement of the clouds. Whilst I believe that the whole landscape makes up the subject of the image, I intended for the viewer's eye to be drawn to the white peak of Skiddaw; the bright white of the snow-capped peaking designed to stand out against the rather cold and grey surroundings.
I wanted the peak to be illuminated so chose a time late in the afternoon with the sun setting over my shoulder to the south-east and waited for the light to break through the clouds to illuminate Skiddaw. It is one of my favourite Wainwrights and - having traveled nearly 400 miles from my home in the south east of England - I was pleased with the result.
AUTHOR
I am an amateur photographer based in the UK. I love to travel and have traveled to Cambodia, Bali, Greece, Spain, Berlin and Italy in the quest to master the art of landscape photography. I enjoy cityscapes, landsacpes and seascapes but am passionate about all forms of photography.
I have a demanding full-time job that takes up 50 - 70 hours a week, but I always try to get out once a week to photograph the city where I work - London - and once a month to somewhere in the UK. I've enjoyed trips to the Lake District, Dorset and the Cotswolds in recent months.
