Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2017 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I wander the streets of whichever city I'm in, searching for stories on people's faces. Years of experience doing this has revealed that each city houses residents who are virtually invisible to everyone else living there. On a late afternoon tram ride in Prague, I noticed this gentleman staring out the window. After a brief conversation and request for a portrait, he leaned back against the glass with this blank stare. I was left to imagine the pain in his life and the story that brought it about.
AUTHOR
I’ve been blessed with the chance to travel to many places around the world. While I enjoy time in modern, cosmopolitan locales, my true love lies in the adventures of the most remote. For, in those places, where Westerners should feel most uncomfortable and unwelcome, I meet some of the most intriguing and fascinating people I’ve ever known. The journey we experience together as we break through language or cultural barriers to find our common ground always enriches my life in ways never expected.
I’ve found that stopping to talk to the man or woman who most people pass usually turns out to be the most rewarding of all endeavors. During those countless conversations in the outdoor markets, along the alleys, in the mountains or near the sea, I have invariably discovered that we all share a common humanity. Despite our differences, we have felt joy, sadness, pride, sorrow, and all the other emotions which, in the end, truly define the life lived.
