ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The photograph in this submission is my abstract interpretation of a chest x-ray using one of the quadrant stone spiral staircases in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow, Scotland. I had the idea to create this manipulated image as I stood at the bottom of the staircase looking up into it's dark curving structure which felt endless and rippling. The inverted image accentuates the light and dark of the staircase, forming a symmetric shape that likens it to the density of light passing through a chest when taking an x-ray of it.

The column central to the staircase, like a spine, stands strong supporting the stone steps, and as in an x-ray the light moves in and out between the ribs that define the enclosed cavernous structure that is the chest, the shadows and hi-lights move up the staircase until they finally disappear.

AUTHOR
I am constantly striving to observe and form my own unique frame of the visual situation laid out in front of me either in colour or in black and white, studying the subject matter and exploring its potential visual connection/interpretation beyond just representing the view in front of the camera, reshaping its context.

Many of my photographic projects originate from a desire to invite the viewer to witness some of the subtle unseen details of our environment, whether it is an offbeat street scene, a conceptual observation of the natural world or a more intimate study of a person's life and how they function within it, respectively.
