ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Depicted is a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) at the San Francisco Zoo. I strongly feel that seeing non-human animals as individuals, as opposed to simply members of a species, can greatly assist in conservation efforts by allowing viewers to empathize with their unique characteristics. My goal was to photograph this chimp as an individual and coax a sense of relation between the subject and viewer.
AUTHOR
Photography has had a significant impact on my life. My great-grandmother and grandmother were both avid photographers and even studied under Ansel Adams. My love of the craft primarily developed out of my admiration for wildlife and the places I loved. I grew up in Napa Valley and graduated from University of California Davis in evolutionary anthropology, with an emphasis in primatology. My fascination with primates and their relation and likeness to our species has been a catalyst in my photographic development. I hope to portray their uniqueness and sense of individuality, as would a portrait photographer with a human subject. I firmly believe that seeing nonhuman animals as individuals can lead to great progress in conservation and animal rights.
