ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada not far from the Canadian Rocky Mountains. I got up early one spring morning to arrive at Upper Kananaskis Lake Park, in the thick fog, out of cell coverage, still in the dark and all alone. I parked my van, lowered the ramp and wheeled out in my manual wheelchair (I am a paraplegic, 12 years ago after a motorcycle accident at 50 years old). After waiting for the fog to lift and getting some great shots of the still frozen lake some movement caught my eye. Not 125 feet away a Grizzly bear appeared at the edge of the parking lot on the grass edge. He saw me but could not be bothered to come closer or leave. For the next hour and a half he would walk along the edge eating the grass looking up from time to time making sure I had not moved I suppose. With only the sounds of a waterfall and some birds in the distance it was such a peaceful and magical time to be with one of natures large animals.
AUTHOR
Geoffrey Olsen spends his time either in Calgary, Banff National Park or somewhere between the two. After spending years as a Chief Pilot for an Aerial Mapping firm, flying photo missions all over North America Geoffrey suffered a disabling accident in 2005 grounding him from his number one career choice. Within a few years he turned to his second career choice and has enjoyed every minute of it. Geoffrey has earned an Honourable Mention for one of his photos from the 2017 Monochrome Photography Awards, an International Black and White Photography Contest. From a young age he first learned how to work with a camera and develop his own black and white film. He never lost that attachment to the black and white photography and many of his works are in that medium. Geoffrey loves the interaction with weather and the mountains and the contrasts they sometimes provide.
