Conceptual: Honorable Mention 2017 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This image is part of a fourteen-day project. ‘Absence of Presence’ is a reflection of our own mortality and our intrinsic demand for proof of existence. It symbolizes self-representation, presence in abstract form. The evidence of human interaction contrasts with the sense of morning abandonment.
In our beds we dream, we plan; we think through our daily exertions. This process is embodied in the tousled sheets left behind, ready to be smoothed over and start anew. Each day, moments after I awoke, I photographed my bed just as it was.
The evidence of human interaction within the bed, contrasts with the sense of abandonment. In addition, the beds transitory state, altering daily represents regeneration.
Free from external interference, the bed becomes a displaced object, relying on it’s form and structure, thus allowing it to transfer from the representative to imaginative.
AUTHOR
Angela Graham’s attention to detail and interest in the history of photography has produced a unique style that has been positively received by her peers.
In her own words, she enthusiastically describes her love of photography; “Like many others, I am inspired by great image makers before me but more so from my life experiences and the world itself. I love taking an idea from a thought or a glimpse and forming something unique, all of my own making.”
After studying graphic design at Glasgow College of Building & Printing in 1988, Graham spent 10 years working in graphic design and advertising before taking time out to raise her family.
Her love of the arts continued throughout those years with photography becoming a more integral part of her life. It soon became apparent that she should take this interest to the next level. Graham initially studied photography for three years at Glasgow Kelvin College, before continuing onto the BA Honours programme at City of Glasgow College, where she recently received a First Class Honors degree in Photography.
Graham has exhibited in Glasgow and London and was shortlisted for the AOP Student awards in 2016.
In addition to her commissions, Graham is currently working on a number of exciting personal projects, with plans to exhibit in Spring 2018. Graham lives in the West End of Glasgow with her husband, three children and their dog.
