A spring, a capsule, a cocoon, a nest and a box are images of things that can shut out and separate from that which is most dear to us, but sometimes such things can also reveal to us our “impossible” dreams or secrets. Sylvia Diez places her body into the realm of metaphor, in her position as “prisoner” and thus illustrating our fragility or that which we fear most.
The unconscious, the feminine, leads us to Pandora, the woman who opened the box, releasing the evils upon mankind and leaving only hope imprisoned inside.
In these photographs the artist recreates the search for and creates awareness of the riches that such a box might contain, thus demonstrating our human aspiration to transcend. In this realm, we men must confront our ghosts and, upon opening the box, we come face to face with our deepest desires, thus placing us in a position of great risks.
Diez gives us a moment of pause and reflection, a moment to think about what imprisons us and what might liberate us.
