Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2017 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
this was taken in a small town in Quezon province in southern Luzon Island of the Philippines right after a night of the most powerful and devastating typhoon that hit northern philippines. I got up early to shoot and record the devastation done by the thyphoon, when i heard this cry from a young boy, calling out for his father: Father, Father in Filipino --"Tatay, Tatay!" - I was about to take a picture of the boy when suddenly a head of a man appeared fromone of the holes in the damaged roof; which made for a perfect photo of the boy, sscratching his head, the damaged nipa and bamboo house and the man's upper bondy sticking out from the damaged roof.
AUTHOR
THE art of Godi Gutierrez, like his life, is about inner peace and spiritual freedom.
In his latest series, a pictorial monograph entitled Dream of the Landscape, Godi leads us through sixteen images, each opening up a unique space for contemplation and delectation. If one had to choose among them, it would not be easy. Bordering on abstraction, each piece offers a subtle variant of the contemplative experience. Here we are drawn into a luminous coral and ultramarine distance; here the great desert extends; now we rejoice before a turquoise sea; we hover over a blaze of moonlit cloud; here is the silk of an orchid petal, this one a lake of iridescence… These are places visited only in dreams - and yet, astoundingly, each was born in the mundane world around us.
In another recent series, The Vanishing Fishing Village, the artist worked with images composed of subtle, shimmering prints recently exhibited at a one man show in the Philippines. In this series, he has taken what started as ordinary photographs, shot on a long-ago vacation, and transformed them into simple and elegant limited edition prints, vibrant with the life they portray. With great tenderness he resurrects scenes long gone – common people working on their boats from sunrise to sunset. Since the village was destroyed for a government reclamation project soon after the photographs were taken, this series is cherished not only for its artistic integrity, but as a poignant record of a world that has been lost.
Goddi’s long career in the visual arts began with the study of architecture, Fine Arts Sculpture, but grew to embrace photography and graphic design, Toy & Game design, both of which he blends masterfully in his current works. Educated in the arts, philosophy, and psychology at the University of the
