Conceptual: Honorable Mention 2018 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This work is based on the idea of creating pieces for visually impaired people, in order to make photographs subjected not only to sight but also to touch. My will was to understand how “visual” media can be accessed by a visually impaired public. While I was researching, it did not take long to notice that there is a lack of academic discourse on possible ways of making "visual" art accessible to visually impaired. In order to create this new "images" I started combining photography and poetry. I embedded photographs with braille tactile alphabet (with the help of a laser cutter machine) and I have questioned myself regarding the change generated. Is the photograph a no dimensional artwork or, giving it different depths with the Braille, is now a sculpture? The theme of the work is based on the repression of women sexuality in strongly catholic environments with attention to the place I grew up in: Italy. The poetry is the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, focusing on the verses representing women in Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. The submission is a "scan" of one page of the book.
AUTHOR
As an image maker I love to celebrate beauty in all its different shapes and colours, not only in human beings, but in the world that surround us. My most recent work relates to the possibility of creating images accessible by visually impaired people, using different media in order to create work that put the fully sighted audience and the visually impaired one on the same level of participation.
