AUTHOR
Carol Lyon, a self taught photographer, began her photographic career ten years ago. After moving from California to Texas, Carol turned her attentions to her 1st love: animals. She became a zookeeper. She evolved from zookeeper to the zoo’s staff photographer when the 50 pound feed sacks began to take their toll. She began her photography career by doing the zoo’s signage in exchange for keeping the rights to the pictures she took.
That transition lead her into artistic recognition and showing her images throughout the art festival circuit within Texas where she was accepted into shows like Woodlands Waterways, Bayou City, Fiesta Texas, Rockport, and Southlake. Carol found continued recognition by having her work displayed in over 27 galleries from Austin, Texas to Buenos Aires, Argentina to Berlin, Germany and Athens, Greece in that time frame as well as being in nine book inclusions.
Along the way, Carol has garnered many awards. Notably, she was the winner of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers 9th Edition, received 1st Place in the International Worldwide Photographic Gala/Pollux Awards in Animals & Wildlife, was Finalist in the Charles Dodgson Black & White Awards, and won the Wildlife series category in Wildlife in the 15th JMC Awards.
From fashion model to live theatre owner to teacher to zookeeper to photographer, Carol’s had the advantage of growing up surrounded by artistic mentors and the knowledge gleaned from careful observation. The factors controlling Carol’s work are shooting photographs of what amuses and touches her. She likes to exalt the familiar, celebrate the ordinary, and honor the creatures of the world in order to pull the viewer in to a more intimate experience of the natural world. The bonus: it allows her to be around her beloved animals.
