Fashion / Beauty: Honorable Mention 2018 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Frequently, I find inspiration through the fact that although modern culture seems avant-grade, when we take a closer look we find tantamount similarities in all the cultures that have come to pass. For this entry, I was interested in highlighting a photo that accentuates prevalent experience in urban environments and their ties to preceding progress. Culture is ever-changing but frequently repeats itself in similar fashions. I preferred black and white photography as my medium to express this conception due to its ability to accentuate textures, contours, and tonal range. Although I have a tendency to get caught up in evolving society, as I look around I see our roots in the past. I intend to show this reflection - that even as our culture changes, the ties we have in our modern life to previous times are clearly delineated.
AUTHOR
Over the years I’ve realized my life has a trend of becoming distressingly monotonous without an ability to express personal experience through art.
I’ve always been drawn to others who express their ideals using art. I’ve found frequent inspiration in artists who push back at broad social norms with progressive portrayals of modernity. There are so many people that came before me that set the standard for the evolution of society through art. These artists pushed back at societal norms and because of that allowed me to express my personal experiences today unhindered.
I try to spend my time expressing personal emotions and experiences through art, this is the clearest way I’ve found to communicate. And I hope to inspire others to make art, like previous artists did for me.
I’m from South Austin, born and raised. Currently, I’m pursuing my BFA in Photography at Seattle University. In two years, I’m planning to move to the United Kingdom to get my MFA.
Through out life, I’ve realized I surround myself with art because I struggle without it.
