ENTRY DESCRIPTION
"Spine" in the first of a ten part photographic series, featuring black and white diptychs that portray the similarities between flora and the human body. It is a convergence of man and nature, a pairing that we often fail to notice. The monochromatic palette and the depth and range of value draws attention to the shape and form of each photograph, both in their divergence and their sameness.
This particular piece illustrates a strength in simplicity. It was the first pair of images that I put together, and it is the piece that compelled me to understand the purpose and direction of the series as a whole. I like to think that it will be a turning point in my own artistic career for years to come.
AUTHOR
Katherine is a Junior studying photography at Columbia College Chicago. Her interest in photography began when she was just thirteen years old, and she spent her teenaged years experimenting with the medium--often resulting in unappealing, albeit interesting works. It wasn't until she left small-town Michigan for Chicago that her formal education began in ernest. She quickly realized how little she knew about photography--that a natural artistic eye wouldn't be enough to find success in the field-- and subsequently threw herself into her work. These days, Katherine's love for photography is stronger than it ever was before. She works as a portrait artist and spends her personal time creating photographic series of her own.
