ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The middle of the tropical jungle is not a place you'd normally think of to go diving. In order to get to the entrance to the largest system of underwater caves in the world, however, you must drive into the Yucatecan jungle in southern Mexico and lower your gear down to the dark waters with ropes.

For the Mayans, these were the entrances to the netherworld, where powerful gods dwelled. They are also some of the most majestic and awe-inspiring places on Earth. Once you descend to 120ft, a dense cloud of hydrogen sulphide envelops you, and as you explore, trees which have been submerged for ages emerge out of it.

Photography in these conditions is tricky. Dive time and depth are narrowly limited, light is scarce, and space limited. Moving slowly and deliberately is essential. It is hard to put the feelings elicited by this atmosphere into words, but the photo does an ok job of hinting at them.
