Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2018 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This piece was photographed on January 20, 2017 in Washington DC. Being a photographer from Ohio, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to the Capitol for the Women’s March - my partner and I arrived a couple days early and I decided to document the aftermath of the Presidential inauguration the night before the March. The police force was lined up on one side, the anarchists and spectators on the other; between the two, a peace activitst mediating the encounter. I thought it was a really important moment in history to capture. The image is relevant for the current times that our country is facing.
AUTHOR
Alissa is an artist based in Columbus, Ohio and is a second-year MFA candidate specializing in Photography at Columbus College of Art and Design. Most of her work has an underlying theme of people who demonstrate beauty and boldness. The images that she creates have been inspired by socio-cultural issues that women and minorities have been experiencing in recent times. She aspires to show this through documentary-style photos of people who are working for change as well as styled images of unapologetic femininity. Her hope is that when people engage with her work, they feel a sense of empowerment and self-worth by identifying with people in the images.
