ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The title of the series, “Our Mother’s Melanin” embodies a variety of themes and aspects that are highly prevalent in the black female community. Most significantly the reassurance of sisterhood - as a black woman, I don’t have to know my sister for her to be my sister. The title, was to embody this relationship and what it brings.
The photo series illustrates – among many themes – the idea of shedding. I wanted to capture, re-birth of a black woman, stepping out of her skin - skin that has been partially constructed by society through stereotypes, and partially representative of herself.
