ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Recife is a cultural melting pot in the northeast of Brazil. During the carnival over a million people go to the streets wearing costumes, dancing and playing frevo, a folk style of jazz. This is a candid shot taken on the streets of Poço da Panela, a small neighbourhood in the north side of the city, on a saturday afternoon a week before the carnival.
The image was taken with a digital rangefinder camera, then recorded on 35mm film for darkroom printing.
AUTHOR
Ali was born in Recife, a cultural melting pot in the extreme unequal Northeast region of Brazil. Around 2002 he began a career as an advertising copywriter and a modest art collection. Unable to draw or paint, he admired those who found ways to express their feelings in visual form. Although he always loved photography, he didn’t embrace it for a long time, feeling that he didn’t deserved to be called an artist. Something he only started to overcome after diving into street photography and his experiments in a hybrid digital-to-film workflow.
