Drought. by James Lewin (Kenya)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I think this photograph tells us a story about how tough the drought is for these animals and how desperate they are. I think the sky and the dust adds to the drama while also tying it all together.
I jumped upon this opportunity to photograph these zebra coming to drink at a drying up water hole in Tsavo while I was in fact waiting for a big tusker to come and drink at this very spot but he was taking his time and the zebras were walking straight towards the water and so I quickly placed my remote camera on the ground and drove away to ensure I didn’t disrupt their behaviour. The photograph I had envisaged was a line of zebras stretching from the foreground into the background. I could have never imagined the two locusts to be within the frame, nor could I have imagined the two zebras to start fighting just a few yards in front of my 24mm lens.
