ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I found this shoal of squid right near the surface at the end of a dive in Indonesia. This one particular squid seemed to be very interested in my camera, perhaps by the light reflecting off the lens. I stayed with it for so long that I almost ran out of air. Finally, the squid faced me straight on, which is a very rare occurrence. Two things struck me immediately - the first was how much it looked like an elephant with a trunk, and the second was how the right side of the mantle seemed very beat up. I would love to know the story of how it happened. It was a truly special encounter for me as a lifelong scuba diver.
