Conceptual: Honorable Mention 2018 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
There are always at least two sides to everything. For my submission, I wanted to portray one of the many sides to social media/virtual platforms. Despite the fact that the virtual world is very prominent in our everyday lives, it can also lead one to slip towards the wrong direction. One can become emotional disconnected, lose touch with reality, or even forget the authenticity of face-to-face communication.
In my work, the middle row represents our society/reality. However, if you look closely, no one is looking “at” each other - they’re all looking elsewhere emotionless. The top and bottom rows, which are slightly faded, represent the images of themselves that they’ve created in the virtual world. And in that world, they are expressive and are actually facing the ones who are facing them in reality.
AUTHOR
I am a LA-based freelance/fine arts photographer.
I've always been surrounded by photos and cameras ever since I was a child because my father was also a photographer back in the 80's. However, my parents strictly opposed my path of becoming one too because they viewed art as a hobby. And their views still hasn't changed. Having graduated from college with an intention of going to nursing school due to family pressure, I dropped everything and picked up my camera again. Despite the fact that I've been taking photos since I was 12, I only started doing professional work this year. Everything I've learned until now is self-taught, but I am excited to share my world of art with others.
