ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The Wild Coast along the Eastern Cape coastline of South Africa is notorious for its rough seas and rocky shores. This image of the Hole in the Wall close to the town of Coffee Bay, captured with a 150 second exposure, depicts a scene in stark contrast with the legacy of the Wild Coast.
The indigenous Xhosa people called Hole in the Wall “esiKhaleni”, which means “place of noise”. Under certain weather conditions the waves slam against the rocks with a resounding crack and sometimes the hole roars during storms – The Xhosa tribesmen believed that these were the sounds of the "sea people" singing and shouting.
