Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2018 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
"Shades and Shapes" was taken on the dunes of the Sahara Desert, Morocco, in March 2018. I was particularly fascinated in the game of lights which took place at sunset and the morphing of shapes and shadows to form what seemed an alternate landscape. The reason why I chose black and white is that colours, in my opinion, would have taken away from the focus of what I wanted to show in this photo; the simplicity and at the same time complexity of nature itself, through lines created on the sand by the wind, the lights and shadows on the dunes hit by the sun and the shapes of the dunes themselves.
AUTHOR
Simone Marchiolli was born in Rome and grew up in the Italian countryside. His passion for wildlife photography took him to Australia where he discovered a range of innovative new techniques to apply to his work. Since then he has continued to embrace photography through travel, focussing on expressive colours and conveying depth through black and white in his pursuit of telling stories through pictures.
Photography has always been the best way in which I can convey my thoughts and ideas. To me, pictures capture the essence of the moment. When people say, “tell me about your trip”, I find it impossible to weave together a story which encapsulates months of travelling around 5 continents in such a way that combines athmosphere, emotions and tells a decent tale. Words are just not my thing.
