Nature: Honorable Mention 2018 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Recently I embarked on a series of photographs named 'A Desert in Transition’, which is a collection of images taken only 20-30 minutes inland from the city of Dubai. I wanted to document the serene beauty that's still left on the doorstep of an ultra modern, evolving global hub, which may struggle to survive the onslaught of human expansion.
This photograph accompanying the is ironically called ‘So Lonely’, as just outside of the framed composition left and right, were picnickers enjoying their sunset feast! This is a tree I’ve returned to on a number of occasions due to its stark beauty and unusual appearance. On this particular evening the sky was unusually overcast, which filtered the low sunlight creating flat light conditions and reducing the contrast. These are conditions I relish because of the ethereal appearance the desert seems to posses when the light is reduced.
It’s becoming more difficult to find seclusion in this relative small desert of Dubai. The desert trees are diminishing due to the evening campfires, 4x4 SUV’s leave trails across the dunes and the once secluded pristine locations are becoming more popular. But the beauty of these desert dunes still stands tall and it’s not to late for conservation and action. My photographs are a public reminder of this beauty and I truly hope they may just contribute, even slightly in opening our eyes to what we have on natures doorstep.
AUTHOR
I've always liked clean design, minimal modern art, simple compositions in landscape paintings, symmetry and balance. It always made sense to me that when composing a photograph, the image should be simplistic and uncluttered. This minimal style reflects a calm sense of mood which is my overall intention. I've always been more interested in shooting less recognisable locations as it adds more intrigue to the photograph, I'm also drawn to water, so you will see this appearing in much of my work. Beaches, lakes, oceans; they all hold photographic opportunities due to the changing reflective light, the movement and mood that water can produce with long exposures and the right conditions. I’ve visited places across the world such as Australia, USA, South Africa, UK, France, India, Italy, Greece, Jordan and Dubai where I currently reside. Each of these locations has influenced the evolution of my photographic style.
