Portrait: Honorable Mention 2018 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The Paudaung lady of the Kayan tribe are original habitants of Myanmar. They start putting these heavy brass rings around their necks at a very early age to elongate them as the tribe takes long necks as a mark of beauty. This is an image of an old lady which I captured at her residence cum store on Inlay lake where a few of them have relocated to earn a living in this modern day.
This is not a studio shot and was taken in the middle of the store with a remote flash technique that I use to hide all the clutter by creating this black backdrop with in-camera functions and the flash.
AUTHOR
Singapore based published photographer/author focusing on digital art, as well as portraiture, street, landscape and wildlife photography. I call myself a life long student of photography who does not like being categorized in any one genre. I always say photography is a learning process and one learns something new from everyone provided you are willing to look and listen.
I had a natural flair for photography since childhood, studied it in school, followed by self- learning and workshops over the last decade. More recently I has honed my skills through photography expeditions around the globe , which include major wildlife destinations in India, Sri Lanka and Africa. I am also a graduate from the New York Institute of Photography and an Olympus Visionary.
To me photography is an art - A true medium of self-expression. After my visits to Ladakh in northern India I was inspired to do my first coffee table book, “Swades; Ladakh: The Land of Splendour”, published by Knowledge World Publishers, in September 2010, to showcase the beauty of the region. To travel with me on one of my adventures, I can be contacted at ranjan@ranjan.photography.
I have thereafter been covered and published in various media in India and overseas - Sanctuary Asia Publication, Green Leaf, BanyoPran and Outdoor Photographer. Recently the WWF has also used his images in their campaigns. My works have been exhibited in Solo shows and also group shows at the World Photo Biennial held in Spain and Germany.
