Wildlife: Honorable Mention 2018 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
A Harpy Eagle suns among the branches of a dead Brazil Nut Tree after an unusually cool night in the Madre de Dios Region of the Peruvian Amazon.
I woke up just before dawn at the Hoja Nueva Research Center in the Peruvian Amazon to film the early morning mist when this chance encounter happened. To me, this photo defines a once in a lifetime moment. This juxtaposition of one of the world’s rarest and most powerful eagles sunning in the middle of an illegally deforested area of the Amazon.
With a wingspan up to 7ft and talons larger than the claws of a Grizzly Bear, these massive birds of prey hunt among the dense jungle canopy for sloths and monkeys.
It is estimated that the population of the Harpy Eagle will decline by 25-29% over the next three generations, due primarily to habitat loss from illegal deforestation. Conservation initiatives are underway to try and prevent the species from becoming endangered.

My aim is to capture light and story from a different point of view. Elevated, submerged, condensing seconds into a single frame to invoke a new perspective.
To release appreciation for the mundane, splendor for the serene and aspect for the surreal.
