Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2019 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
October 2018; Kirkjufjara beach, South Iceland
I spent five of my six days exploring the black beaches of South Iceland to create black and white photographic art and perhaps see the Northern Lights. During my first visit to Iceland in 2014 I visited this area for a fleeting 24 hours; no time to really explore and appreciate any area of Iceland!
On this October day, it was a typical day in Iceland: windy throughout, it rained in different spots, the clouds were moving fast, periodically allowing the sun to break through bringing rainbows. Soon after another storm rolled in. At sunset it began to clear again so I returned to this spot hoping for good light.
Icelandic Sculpture is a 4-minute long exposure. By zooming up close to the rock formation off the coast of the black beach I was able to capture the beautiful detail sculpted by nature. The long exposure helps to contrast the stationary rock's detail with the rapid movement of the rough ocean waters, strong winds and stormy clouds. The white foam of the crashing waves marks a line on the black beach. If you look close at the rock it appears as if there are many hands still working, carving new shapes into the rock.
