Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2019 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I spent my summer in the rugged Greek mountains exploring the secluded village of Kerasia, where my grandmother was born and raised along with her five sisters. My desire was to photograph and document the life of the few inhabitants still living there – a life of simplicity and authenticity, where animals roam the dirt and stone roads and fruit is eaten fresh from the trees. In this image, I followed my Aunt Katina, 89-years old, to a dense, overgrown meadow and watched as she expertly navigated the wild landscape to hunt for ‘rigani’ (oregano leaves), never breaking focus except to tie her apron around her head to protect herself from the scorching summer sun.
AUTHOR
I am a passionate photographer, visual artist, and architect from Ontario, Canada. Growing up, I could seldom be seen without a pencil or paintbrush in hand - such was my passion to express myself through image-making. When I received my first DSLR camera at the age of 18 and heard the crunch of the shutter for the first time, I was instantly captivated. My Nikon has lived on my shoulder ever since, and I dream about traversing new lands to find and capture the beautiful life that exists there. Photography allows me to be in the present, see beauty in the ordinary, and eternalize the precious fleeting moments that surround us every day.
