Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2019 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Just a few decades ago, Santiago’s Mapocho River was known for its terrible odor. Now, the shore has its own state-of-the-art cycling track. The bike path runs parallel to the river and is designed to flood, while resisting damage, during the rainy season.
AUTHOR
I grew up one of three brothers, in Viña del Mar, on the central coast of Chile. Son of a computer engineer in the Chilean Navy, I spent my high school years growing up in the United States while my father was stationed there. It was there that I took my first formal class in photography, shooting black and white photos using a Mamiya ZE-2.
After I returned to Chile, I continued my interest in photography despite the high prices to purchase process film and process it, although the advent of digital photography eliminated many of the obstacles that had prevented me from fully developing his skills as a photographer. I won my first photography contest with
5-megapixel Kodak 7200 camera and bought my first Nikon digital camera with the prize money in 2002.
My love of photography has blended well with my lifestyle, hiking and mountain biking throughout Chile. The two come together, allowing me to record the images of the wild places, and incredible flora and fauna of my native country of Chile, so that others may enjoy the richness of its diverse beauty.
