Nude: Honorable Mention 2019 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Cheryl's portrait is part of a series of images taken for my personal project entitled "Beyond the 60th Sense."
The project interviews and photograph volunteers females over 60s about their world views on topics such as depression, body shame, mental health, and, obviously, aging.
Cheryl came to me as a brilliant, successful, and strong woman. After a few minutes of conversation, however, she left the armor down and the scars from the battles were evident. Due to a series of tests on what doctors to be breast cancer, Cheryl was left with scars on her upper abdomen. The scars led to a few potential dates to walk away from Cheryl, who more than the physical scars had her soul marked for life.
Body shaming hurts one deeper than you would think. It breaks their self-esteem the way one perceives themselves.
