Photojournalism: Honorable Mention 2019 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The main aim of my reportage is to introduce the western public to the Egyptian workers of the archaeological campaigns who make it actually possible to bring archeological finds to light and with them the study of the oldest civilisation in history. Many of the labourers of today are highly competent in various methods of excavation and can identify different types of soil stratification as well as date their historical period. They can also read some of the hieroglyphics. They are proud of the work handed down to them over generations and almost all proudly claim to have an ancestor who participated in the excavations of Howard Carter, Ernesto Schiapparelli or other famous Egyptologists; Work in an archaeological excavation in Egypt is extremely hard, they work from 7 am to 4 pm and it is performed almost entirely through the labourers’ physical strength.
