Portrait: Honorable Mention 2019 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
The Suri tribe live in remote villages in Omo Valley Southern Ethiopia. The women pride themselves on their body scars, a sign of beauty, and how many they carry. This decorative scarification is performed by slicing their skin with a razor blade after lifting it with a thorn. Despite the painful process, it is shameful to show any signs of suffering.
I met this Suri woman, for a brief moment at the local tribe market - she imbued beauty, dignity and strength.
