Portrait: Honorable Mention 2019 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Out of the forest, where we had set up camp, in a remote Kara tribe area in Southern Ethiopia, appeared this striking man with a large gun slung over his shoulder. Karo men paint their faces and bodies with natural white clay paint to look menacing and command respect. Many of the Kara tribe carry Kalashnikov AK-47 guns (bought in nearby south sudan) to use to fight off any inter-tribal conflicts over stealing of cattle or land issues.
