Portrait: Honorable Mention 2019 (professional)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
I like creating portraits on location when traveling to far away places. This portrait to the Nomad family was made high in the Arail mountains of Western Mongolia when I was trekking in search of snow leopards last winter. The Nomads bring their cattle to the higher mountains for the winter as the valleys have layers of ice thus not letting the weeds grow for cattle to feed on. They told me that the slides are too steep for the snow to sit on thus giving the wild weeds a chance to grow even in severe winter conditions. Life is not easy as they take large groups of cattle and climd these steep slopes everyday to guard them against the wolves and Snow leopards. This family was very excited to see my camera and it wa then I decided to shoot this portrait inside their hut with the little light that I managed to create through the open door and window.
AUTHOR
Singapore based published photographer/author focusing on digital art, as well as portraiture, street, landscape and wildlife photography. I call myself a life long student of photography who does not like being categorized in any one genre. I always say photography is a learning process and one learns something new from everyone provided you are willing to look and listen.
I had a natural flair for photography since childhood, studied it in school, followed by self- learning and workshops over the last decade. More recently I has honed my skills through photography expeditions around the globe , which include major wildlife destinations in India, Sri Lanka and Africa. I am also a graduate from the New York Institute of Photography and an Olympus Visionary.
To me photography is an art - A true medium of self-expression. After my visits to Ladakh in northern India I was inspired to do my first coffee table book, “Swades; Ladakh: The Land of Splendour”, published by Knowledge World Publishers, in September 2010, to showcase the beauty of the region. To travel with me on one of my adventures, I can be contacted at ranjan@ranjan.photography.
I have thereafter been covered and published in various media in India and overseas - Sanctuary Asia Publication, Green Leaf, BanyoPran and Outdoor Photographer. Recently the WWF has also used his images in their campaigns. My works have been exhibited in Solo shows and also group shows at the World Photo Biennial held in Spain and Germany.
