ENTRY DESCRIPTION
This picture was taken at Ponta do Sol, a small village of Madeira, during my journey in this Island. Originally, this is a fragment of a sculptural mural of large proportions, composed of over three thousand face sculptures, created by the Portuguese artist named Patricia Sumares. These were created from two hundred and fifty molds of not only local residents of Ponta do Sol but also tourists and others who showed an interest in taking part of this project. The onlooker takes on the role of co-creator, insofar that they participate in the making of the work. By “lending” their face and becoming a living part of the panel itself. But they are more than mere faces, they are the expressions and feeling of a community, its life stories and collective memories. They are human landscapes of hope which reveal certain sense of spirituality and civic union.
Just as elsewhere in the world, Madeira plunges into a long sleep caused by the Covid. During the confinement on the island, I wanted to create some photographic works to mark this memory. From the original picture, I created a layer of spider web covering all the faces. This is how the work "Sleeping spring" was born.
AUTHOR
Formerly : international relationships, international university-level cooperation
Latterly : textile designer, self-taught photographer
Living in different cities, different countries, photography became for me a mode of expression. It helped me to enjoy the experience of changing environment. Something about new places nudged the visual side of me. Strange landscapes, shadows and unusual angles fuelled my inspiration.
I always consider myself to be a quiet person, expressing myself through words or somehow, photography is my language of choice. Naturally, imaginary storytelling became my passion. I'm particularly drawn to the poetic impact of artistic photography. I choose and edit the scenes, setting the stage for viewers to bring their imaginations and private meanings to these places made special by my selection and attention.
