ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Montrosa Cactus Bloom still open at dawn in New Mexico. The giant bloom of this flower is designed to attract giant moths, however it also attracts early rising photographers. This image was captured using multi-focal exposures for the necessary depth of field. Since the sun is rising and the flower is closing, it is a race against time to acquire this single image. This image has taken years to finally capture at just the right moment. In the meantime the cactus has grown several feet taller, making the image capture that much more difficult. Thankfully the cactus has also branched creating a few lower blooms once a year.
