Landscapes: Honorable Mention 2020 (amateur)
ENTRY DESCRIPTION
Whilst returning from a long walk on a winter's day along the coast of the Isle of Skye, the sun began to sink through heavy black cloud. As the sun neared the horizon, spectacular rays of light broke through the cloud base illuminating the isles of Soay and Rum. I used a telephoto lens to compress the elements of the scene and minimize distractions. I deliberately underexposed by a stop to silhouette the foreground and keep the detail in the multiple crepuscular rays that were now bursting through the cloud.
AUTHOR
I grew up in the New Forest and was fortunate to have spent time in the mountains and other 'wild' places from an early age. Motivated by a desire to share my experiences of these beautiful landscapes, I soon developed an interest in photography. This passion for the outdoor environment led to a career in outdoor education. I continued to develop my photography skills as a student of Ffotogallery, the national agency for the development of photography in Wales and I have recently completed an MA in Documentary photography at the University of South Wales. I am currently working on a long-term project examining re-wilding in the U.K.
